  • Congratulations to the Irish Independent on their series of three weekly articles in the Farming Supplement which commenced on the 7th January last addressing the importance of carefully considering one’s Will and the various factors that should be taken into account. The law does not allow a person making a Will total free reign on how they distribute their assets after their death and various sensible safeguards are built in to the system to that provision is made for spouses and children. The main thrust of the series of articles is the importance of avoiding disputes within families by carefully considering your Will and, if at all possible, discussing your intentions with your family so that there are no unpleasant surprises after your death. The first week’s article was called “Avoiding all the Heartache a Will can possibly cause”. It can be found at the following link. Well know barrister, Vinog Faughan SC was interviewed for the article. The second week’s article published last Tuesday 14th January was called “Don’t take a chance with a ‘DIY Will’ that might not be valid” and can be found at the following link. The final article will be published next Tuesday, 28th January and is entitled and will no doubt be worth the wait as the quality of the first two articles in the series has been excellent.

I recommend anyone interested in making Will, whether they are a farmer or not, to read these series of articles. The articles give an important insight on the importance of making a Will, giving it full and careful consideration and indeed keeping it under review, depending on changes in your own circumstances and that of your dependents.
